[OFFICIAL] Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy and Resource Guide.msg Subject: [OFFICIAL] Alcohol and Other Drugs Policy and Resource Guide From: Official Announcement Date: Tue, 26 Oct 2010 11:02:51 -0500 To: OFFICIAL_STAFF@LISTSERV.UIC.EDU Dear Students and Employees: The University of Illinois at Chicago has a long standing commitment to the support and maintenance of a drug-free environment for its students and employees. In keeping with this history, we would like to provide you with a link to the existing UIC Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) policy, which you will find below. The focus and message of this policy are not new; however, the format has been updated to make it easier to read and to provide resource information. The policy and resource guide was prepared in accordance with the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988 and the Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act Amendments of 1989. It describes the health risks and legal sanctions associated with alcohol and other drugs. It outlines the University's standard of conduct and disciplinary actions taken against students or employees who violate the standard. It also provides university and community resources if help with a drug or alcohol related problem is needed. The AOD policy represents your University's continued commitment to creating a healthy learning and work environment. To ensure the success of this mission and to meet federal guidelines, this policy will be distributed electronically to all UIC students and employees on an annual basis. Please click on the link below and take a moment to review and familiarize yourself with the policy: http://www.uic.edu/depts/wellctr/docs/AODPolicy.pdf If any questions arise regarding the UIC Alcohol and Other Drugs policy and resource guide, students should contact the Office of the Dean of Students at (312) 996-4857. The new report, linked here, http://www.uic.edu/index.html/Chancellor/risingabove.pdf examines the progress or lack thereof being made by the United States in confronting the global competitive challenges we face. The report cites dozens of economic and education facts both here and abroad, particularly in China, to illuminate the current path of U.S. competitiveness. The report also addresses the need to reauthorize the America COMPETES Act and to make sustained investments in education and research. I hope you find this as engaging and compelling as I have. Change, financial stress and uncertainty can often prompt rumors and speculation. While we cannot answer every concern, we wanted to write to you regarding some of the more serious questions that have been circulating, particularly around the proposed creation of a Vice President for Health Affairs. We also want to encourage your participation and active engagement in upcoming consultative meetings regarding this proposed reorganization; this is an opportunity to share your comments, concerns and suggestions. Times of historic challenge require thoughtful, effective and far-reaching solutions. The University has three unique campuses, and the University as a whole can better succeed if its campuses are strong, vital institutions. The proposed reorganization is not an attempt to eliminate campus identities, but rather to achieve greater collaboration and operating efficiencies so we can remain equal to our aspirations. UIC today is an institution of growing national and international prominence. It has a record enrollment of 27,300 students and is among the nation's most diverse universities. The Great Cities Commitment is a profound expression not only of UIC's values, but of its value to metropolitan areas in Illinois and around the world. UIC plays a key role in educating Illinois' health professionals. All of these attributes and successes are a result of vision - including the 1982 merger that created the modern UIC - and a great deal of scholarship, talent and hard work by many dedicated faculty, staff and students across 15 colleges. Our goal is to preserve and strengthen this legacy. The six health sciences colleges are part of UIC and will remain so. The health sciences colleges and the education of health professionals is a core part of UIC's mission and identity, and the deans of those colleges will continue to report to UIC's Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The University's Senates are engaged in a process of broad consultation. Again, we encourage all of you to become involved in this process and to share your comments and concerns. The Senates' reports to the Board of Trustees need to fully reflect the experience and expertise of our entire community. This cannot be accomplished without your participation. Announcements regarding the campus' consultative meetings scheduled for Wednesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 27 were emailed to the campus yesterday. In its long history, the University of Illinois has not only survived times of challenge but emerged as a stronger, more vibrant and more relevant institution. The creation of UIC in 1982 was a reflection of the University's growth and tradition of positive response to society's changing needs and expanding horizons. We are confident that the University will rise to the challenges of our own day just as our predecessors did. Thank you for all you do for the students, patients and the public UIC serves. Last week the Chancellor sent a message re-affirming the Non Discrimination Statement and Reaffirmation of Diversity Statement in support of UIC's ongoing commitment to the many diversity efforts taking place on campus. Today, I want to send a strong message to the campus community that UIC supports the security, well-being and dignity of all LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) students, faculty and staff. If you are experiencing harassment, bullying or discrimination or have observed someone else fall victim to such behavior, please contact the Office of Access and Equity at 312-996-8670, the Gender and Sexuality Center at 312-413-8619, or the Counseling Center at 312-996-3490. We want to continue our efforts at UIC to enhance your ability to assist our 27,000 students and to help the university community maintain an environment of compassionate concern and informed responsiveness to students in distress. Also, there are links to "Managing Distress Following a Tragedy" and "Having Classroom Discussions Following a Crisis." Call the Counseling Center (312-996-3490) for any of these services or to schedule a "Helping the Emotionally Distressed Student" program. The U & I Care initiative, which began last year, is designed to educate students about asking for personal assistance, the importance of supporting each other, and helping to identify troubling student behavior. Faculty and staff are encouraged to participate in this effort and to share information with the appropriate campus office when a student is in need of assistance. More information is available at http://uandicare.uic.edu. Your willingness and ability to recognize and respond to students who appear to be emotionally distressed is an invaluable service.
