Illinois law and University statutes and regulations require all salaried faculty and academic staff to complete the report and obtain prior approval for external activities. The form is due to your department head by Friday, October 1, 2010. The report and approval process is not intended to discourage non-University income producing activities. It is recognized that most of these activities are consistent with and often beneficial to your university roles. The report and approval procedures assist in ensuring that external activities are compatible with University obligations. The form and instructions are available under the RNUA link at http://www.research.uic.edu/conflict. The Policy on Conflicts of Commitment and Interest, including sanctions, is also included on the link. This policy applies to all academic staff. Civil Service employees are covered under a different policy and do not complete the RNUA form. If you have any questions, please contact the Conflict of Interest Office at rnua@uic.edu or (312) 996-4070. Thank you very much your cooperation. Richard Anderson Associate Director, Environmental Health and Safety [OFFICIAL] Message from the Chancellor.msg Subject: [OFFICIAL] Commuter Bus Service From: Official Announcement Date: Tue, 7 Sep 2010 15:06:06 -0500 To: OFFICIALX_STAFF@LISTSERV.UIC.EDU Dear UIC Faculty, Staff and Students, We regret to inform you that due to declining ridership and a recurring budget deficit, the campus will cease operating the Commuter Shuttle serving the downtown train stations. The last day the Commuter Shuttle will operate is Friday, October 1. The Commuter Shuttle has operated at a deficit for the last ten years. Legislative Audit Commission Guidelines require commuter bus services to be treated as an auxiliary enterprise and must be self-supporting and not subsidized from other funds. In an effort to maintain a self-supporting program, we have both reduced service and raised ticket prices. Each time an increase was implemented, ridership declined, offsetting fare increases. From 2002 to 2008, ridership steadily declined even though we were at or below the CTA’s one-time ticket price and had only one service reduction. Ridership has decreased from 357 average daily rides in fiscal year 2008 to 242 in fiscal 2009, to 218 in 2010. Since July, 2007, we have lost more than 35,000 rides. As the ridership declines, the deficit increases. Given the University’s current fiscal crisis, we simply cannot continue to add to the accumulated deficit. Concurrently, additional services have been provided to the UIC community. Within the last eight years, students have received the CTA U-PASS. Metra implemented a link pass which enables its monthly ticketholders to ride CTA buses for $39.00 per month. These two options have contributed to fewer people utilizing the Commuter Shuttle Service. We continue to explore options of sharing a combined commuter shuttle service with Rush. For now, UIC faculty, staff and students will be able to ride the Rush shuttle. Information regarding the Rush Shuttle and CTA ticket and service information is detailed below this note. This semester, the UIC Office of Sustainability will be conducting a travel survey and we will inquire about shuttle bus stops. Reimbursement of unused Commuter Shuttle tickets: Unused tickets will be reimbursed from October 4 – 29 at the following locations: Service Center West (SCW) – 828 S. Wolcott, 1st Floor Lobby – 8:30 am - 6:00 pm Service Center East (SCE) – 750 S. Halsted, 1st Floor Lobby – 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Student Services Building (SSB) – 1200 W. Harrison – Information Center, 1st Floor Lobby – 8:30 am - 4:30 pm USFSCO Cashier Operations (MAB) – 809 S. Marshfield Avenue, Room 116MAB - 9:00 am – 4:00 pm You may also use UIC Commuter Shuttle tickets on the Rush Shuttle until December 31. We recognize that the Commuter Shuttle will be missed by those who depended upon it. We continue to explore other options to replace it. Thank you to those of you who have taken the time to give us feedback and suggestions with the goal of a self-supporting program. Sincerely, Mark Donovan Vice Chancellor for Administrative Services Transportation Options: CTA: Alternative CTA services to commuter rail stations include the #157, #60, and #7 CTA buses, as well as the Pink and Blue L lines. Monthly Metra pass holders can purchase a Link-Up Sticker/Card for unlimited connecting travel on CTA and Pace buses for $39/month. CTA bus service can be tracked using the bus tracker http://www.ctabustracker.com/ or a variety of smartphone apps available at http://www.citygoround.org/.
