Marilyn Hau Director of Environmental Health and Safety From: Official Announcement Date: July 11, 2007 5:55:16 PM CDT To: OFFICIAL_FACULTY@LISTSERV.UIC.EDU Subject: [OFFICIAL] Message from the Chancellor Reply-To: donnaj@uic.edu To the Faculty and Staff of UIC Dear Colleagues: I write to tell you that I have decided to retire from UIC at the end of this calendar year, December 2007. After eight years of deep engagement, I am as ready as I ever expect to be to leave this inspiring campus and the people who make it what it is. Given my decision to retire, the recently-launched capital campaign will be best served by an early transition. It is not common but it is entirely feasible and always, I believe, highly desirable to complete a search for a chancellor in six months. President White shares this belief and my confidence that with your support he can get it done. Serving as chancellor at UIC is a privilege that brings daily gratification. While I look forward to my own next steps, I will certainly miss the wonders of UIC and working with its superb faculty, staff, students, supporters and community partners. Thank you for all that you have done, do and will do to sustain this remarkable campus and secure its brilliant future. The Freshman Convocation will be a ceremony to welcome new freshmen and it will mark the official beginning of a new student's entry into the UIC academic community. I ask that you save this date on your calendar as well as inform appropriate college and unit staff so that we can come together as a campus to welcome these new students. Sunday, August 26, 2007 3:00 p.m. UIC Pavilion All freshmen students, their parents as well as university faculty and staff are being invited to attend this special event. Freshman Convocation will be followed immediately by the Chancellor’s New Student Welcome Block Party during which freshmen students and their parents will join us for food, games, prizes, entertainment, and an opportunity to reconnect with their summer orientation leader and academic college staff.
