From: Official Announcement Date: November 5, 2007 3:32:16 PM CST To: OFFICIAL_FACULTY@LISTSERV.UIC.EDU Subject: [OFFICIAL] Message from the Provost Reply-To: bil@uic.edu Dear Colleagues, This fall, the campus is embarking upon searches for deans of two of our colleges: Dean of the College of Engineering and Dean of the College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs (CUPPA). These searches follow the departure of two distinguished deans earlier this year: Prith Banerjee (Engineering) having become Director of HP Labs, and Robin Hambleton (CUPPA) having moved to the University of the West of England, Bristol. Both dean searches are being conducted on a national level by search committees comprised of faculty, staff, students and alumni. I am confident that, with your support, these committees will identify a stellar set of finalists for the campus to interview in the spring. The membership of the search committees can be found at the Provost's Office search webpage: http://www.uic.edu/depts/oaa/search. The search committees welcome your nominations, questions and suggestions. Please direct your correspondence to the committee chairs at the following addresses: Search for the Dean of the College of Engineering Stephanie Lenway, Dean of the College of Business Administration (Search Committee Chair) Email: engrsearch@uic.edu Phone: Kathy Jones, search committee staff person, 312-355-2412 Search for the Dean of College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs Clark Hulse, Dean of the Graduate College, Vice Provost for Graduate and Continuing Studies, and Associate Chancellor (Search Committee Chair) Email: cuppasearch@uic.edu Phone: Kathy Jones, search committee staff person, 312-355-2412 In addition, I encourage you to periodically visit the search webpage, which will be updated regularly with advertisements, announcements, and other information. The recommendation to the trustees for Rick to serve as Interim Chancellor has the concurrence of the UIC Senate Executive Committee. Rick will work in partnership with Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost Michael Tanner, who during his five years at UIC has been involved in virtually all matters academic and operational, to ensure continuity in leadership of UIC in the months ahead as we complete the search for a permanent Chancellor. Rick has a distinguished 38-year record at UIC as both a faculty member in chemistry and as a senior administrator. At his choosing, Rick will not be a candidate for the permanent chancellor appointment but will serve as Interim Chancellor to best serve the UIC community and to facilitate a highly successful search process. Rick will retire once a new Chancellor is on board, with the intention of completing a textbook on thermodynamics. Rick has the respect of the entire campus and is an ideal choice to head UIC while the search for a permanent Chancellor is underway. Dr. Gislason earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Oberlin College and a Ph.D. in chemical physics from Harvard. He joined the UIC faculty in 1969, served as head of the chemistry department from 1993 to 1999 and was Interim Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences in 1997 and 1998 before being named Vice Chancellor for Research. In his current position Rick has overseen UIC’s remarkable growth in federally funded research during this decade to a Top 50 national ranking. Let me also take this opportunity to report that the search for a permanent chancellor is going well. An excellent search advisory committee, chaired by Professor Elliot Kaufman, is hard at work with Vice President for Academic Affairs Meena Rao and me. We have completed meetings with several prospective search consultant firms and expect to finalize an agreement with one soon. The firm selected to assist us will be one with an outstanding record in bringing high-quality, diverse candidates into searches for senior positions. We plan to interview candidates during the winter and spring, and to make a Chancellor appointment effective July 1 or September 1, 2008. Please join me in thanking Rick Gislason and Michael Tanner for their exceptional service and dedication, and for the continuity of strong leadership that they will bring to UIC in the months ahead. Sincerely, B. Joseph White
