The search advisory committee has been working since late October to hire a professional search firm to assist with the search, create the position announcement and distribute it widely, and draft a White Paper which, drawing heavily from the 2010 Strategic Thinking Report and the UIC Strategic Plan, describes who UIC is, who we aspire to be, and the qualities and abilities of the leader we seek to help us achieve these aspirations. We have also created a search web site which contains information about the search. The web site also provides information about UIC for prospective candidates. The URL of the search web site is <_http://www.uillinois.edu/ChancellorSearch/index.cfm_>. We hope you will take a moment to learn more about the search. Sincerely, Elliot Kaufman Chair, Chancellor Search Advisory Committee From: Official Announcement Date: January 28, 2008 6:56:26 PM CST To: OFFICIAL_FACULTY@LISTSERV.UIC.EDU Subject: [OFFICIAL] Message from the Chancellor Reply-To: donnaj@uic.edu Dear Colleagues, In almost four decades at UIC as a faculty member and administrator, I have seen this campus make extraordinary progress toward becoming the nation’s premier urban public research institution. I have no doubt our goal will be met. My top priority as Interim Chancellor is to keep us moving forward so my successor can hit the ground running. Working closely with the provost, deans and other colleagues, I pledge to provide the leadership to position UIC for the next stage in its evolution. I am certain that the reputation and vitality of this campus will attract a strong field of candidates to become our next permanent chancellor. In this first of my regular reports to the campus, I want to begin with an overview of the status of the College of Pharmacy, where a fire forced us to cancel classes and other activities last week. No one was injured in the Jan. 19 blaze, but there was fire damage on the fourth floor and extensive water and smoke damage throughout the building. UIC facilities personnel and outside contractors who specialize in cleanups of this nature were on site immediately and have been working tirelessly to dry out the building, remove the smoke odor, and conduct inspections and repairs. We are not yet certain when the building can reopen, and classes are being held in alternate locations. On behalf of the entire campus, I extend my thanks to Pharmacy Dean Jerry Bauman, Executive Associate Dean Jan Engle, and their faculty and staff for their great work in coping with a very challenging situation. Now, I want to share with you some recent highlights that speak to the excellence and dedication of our community and why I have such high confidence in the future of UIC: --Two UIC faculty members, Associate Professor of Political Science Stephen Engelmann and Professor of History Richard John, have been awarded National Endowment for the Humanities fellowships. --Michael Anderson, chair of performing arts, will conduct at Carnegie Hall next month. Professor Anderson will lead members of the UIC Chamber Choir and other ensembles from across the country in performing Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor. -- UIC’s Midwest Latino Health Research, Training and Policy Center, directed by Associate Professor of Social Work Aida Giachello, received a five-year, $4.2 million grant from the CDC to target racial and ethnic health disparities in the prevalence of diabetes and cardiovascular disease among Latinos and African Americans. -- Sherry Emery, senior research specialist at the UIC Institute for Health Research and Policy, is principal investigator for a $2.4 million grant from the NIH to investigate the impact of anti-smoking television advertising on behaviors among youths, young adults and adults. --UIC’s College of Nursing and City Colleges of Chicago have entered into a partnership to encourage nurses from under-represented groups to advance their education beyond an associate degree. --A team of UIC computer experts led by Professor Robert Grossman won first place in the Third Annual Analytics Challenge to create new methods to protect business, government and personal data sent via the Internet. --Sky Advertising Agency, a student team from the College of Business Administration, won second place in a national competition to develop an advertising and promotions campaign for the Honda Accord. --UIC Police has become the first university police department in the state to attain recognition by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. Recognition is conferred after an arduous two-year review of 97 core standards. We’ve spent a lot of time over the past year on the issue of sustainability. Chancellor Manning, who last September signed the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, formed a campus task force last spring to identify ways that we can improve sustainability at UIC. The task force recently completed its initial work and recommended: -setting benchmarks for reducing energy usage -developing an energy awareness program -reinvigorating campus recycling -promoting sustainability scholarship -creating a permanent chancellor’s committee on sustainability and a campus sustainability office -continuing discussions with the Chicago Climate Exchange with the goal of becoming a member. One of the task force leaders was Cynthia Klein-Benai, assistant director of our Environmental Health and Safety Office, who did a superb job. Subject to approval of the Board of Trustees, I intend to name her an interim associate chancellor in charge of sustainability to continue the momentum of the task force while we consider our next steps on this major initiative. I look forward to reporting to you again soon about more remarkable accomplishments of our community. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to contact me at gislason@uic.edu with your questions or comments. Sincerely, Eric A.
