Reproduced below is the opening of that letter, including a link to a website that will give you much more information.   Because the commitment involved a number of significant pledges and because I had recently formed UIC's Task Force on Campus Sustainability, I sent the materials to the co-chairs of the task force with a request that the task force consider the questions of the nature of the commitments entailed, our capacity to make the investments required, and the symbolic value of signing.   I expect that the task force will respond in the fall, at which time we will consider whether and how to proceed. If you wish to give input to the task force's considerations, please be in touch with either Vice Chancellor Joe Muscarella or Professor Tom Theis.   Sincerely, Sylvia Manning Chancellor _____________________ We invite you to join us in the American College & University Presidents Climate
Commitment, a pledge to take a leadership role on one of the defining challenges of the 21st century: global warming. The unequivocal evidence of climate change and its potential for global health, social, economic and ecological disruption mandates action now. We believe that by banding together in a common effort we can have direct impact on the problem, help other American sectors address it, and garner significant benefits for our institutions. For your convenience, we have gathered important information on the program including the Commitment itself, a list of signatories as of March 15, 2007 and other supporting documentation into an easily downloadable pdf that can be found here: http://www.presidentsclimatecommitment.org/pdf/ACUPCCInformationPacket.pdf       From: "Manning, Sylvia" Date: July 26, 2007 10:00:00 AM CDT To: DDDH@LISTSERV.UIC.EDU Subject: Boycott of Israeli Academics Reply-To: "Manning, Sylvia" Dear Colleagues, Late last month I received the email reproduced below, asking me to join in an expression of dissent from the United Kingdom's University and College Union boycott of Israeli academics and academic institutions. To me, the issue was not one of politics but of the enmeshing of scholarship in politics. With support from the executive committee of the academic senate, I added my name to the list of those joining Columbia University President Lee Bolinger in his statement of protest. You may note with interest that among the signers of the email is Chancellor Richard Herman of our sister campus in Urbana-Champaign. Sincerely, Sylvia Manning Chancellor _____________________________________ Friday, June 29, 2007 Dear Colleagues: We are deeply troubled by the recent decision of the UK's University and College Union to support the principle of a boycott against Israeli academics and academic institutions. Columbia University President Lee Bollinger's response is one which we should all emulate, as many universities have already done. He issued a statement explaining why the UCU action is "antithetical to the fundamental values of the academy," and insisting that if it is "intent on pursuing its deeply misguided policy, then it should add Columbia to its boycott list." As presidents of universities, we have a responsibility to counteract acts, such as the UCU's, which threaten to undermine the basic purposes and processes of scholarly inquiry. We are asking you to join us in endorsing Lee's statement, reprinted below, and applying it to your institution, specifically noting that if the UCU is going to boycott Israeli academic institutions, they should consider your institution as Israeli too. Our colleague, Harold Shapiro, has kindly offered to collect the responses. If you have any questions or concerns, please email him at shapiroh@ajc.org or call him at 212 891-1465. Bienen, President, Northwestern University Graham B. Spanier, President, The Pennsylvania State University Lawrence S. Bacow, President, Tufts University M. Lee Pelton, President, Willamette University ♦ "As a citizen, I am profoundly disturbed by the recent vote by Britain's new University and College Union to advance a boycott against Israeli academic institutions. As a university professor and president, I find this idea utterly antithetical to the fundamental values of the academy, where we will not hold intellectual exchange hostage to the political disagreements of the moment. In seeking to quarantine Israeli universities and scholars this vote threatens every university committed to fostering scholarly and cultural exchanges that lead to enlightenment, empathy, and a much-needed international marketplace of ideas. "At Columbia I am proud to say that we embrace Israeli scholars and universities that the UCU is now all too eager to isolate - as we embrace scholars from many countries regardless of divergent views on their government's policies. Therefore, if the British UCU is intent on pursuing its deeply misguided policy, then it should add Columbia to its boycott list, for we do not intend to draw distinctions between our mission and that of the universities you are seeking to punish. Boycott us, then, for we gladly stand together with our many colleagues in British, American and Israeli universities against such intellectually shoddy and politically biased attempts to hijack the central mission of higher education."   From: DDDH send Date: July 27, 2007 2:56:55 PM CDT To: DDDH@LISTSERV.UIC.EDU Subject: Louis F.
